Launched in 2001, the Dot NAME generic domain extension is the sole TLD meant for personal web pages only. These domains can consist of personal or fictitious names, nicknames and/or other titles people are known by. At first, just 3rd-level registrations were possible, so if you desired to secure john.doe.name, you were required to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration procedures were liberalized and second-level registrations were also allowed. Already acquired 3rd-level domains remained operational.
